This is great morality tale, Caro about making the most of the time we have and not wasting it with looking for the negatives. Ironically, I’ve just written a similar story which maybe doesn’t have the same positive message, but you’ll know it when you see it 😁
Your writing, as usual, is excellent but this is too depressing. Heck, you might as well read that book I gave you, Lessons in Chemistry. There are some similarities but the ending is happy. Very happy.
It does not end on a happy note but think of the transformation he went through. He went from a pessimist to an optimist, to someone who gave hope to others. The end only serves to remind us of the fragility of life.

In that view, I would say he died in a happier state than he would have been had he died before.
