Astronomers, they seek, and they explore
They journey far; they study deep and wide
The mysteries of space, its endless lore
And in their findings, the universe bides
In the end, it's not just the facts they find
As they peer through their telescopes, lenses
Connection to the cosmos, unique kind
Glimpse of star births, wonder commences
We are all astronomers in our way
Seeking stars, planets, constellations bright
And when we gaze upon the Milky Way
We know we are a part in every right
In their light, we see ourselves reflected
The universe, forever connected
Author’s Note
The appearance of the super blue moon on the last day of August motivated me to create this sonnet. The sight of that moon led me to contemplate the extensive knowledge we have obtained about ourselves and the universe through astronomy, the significant amount that still remains a mystery, and our profound link to the cosmos at a microscopic level.
Why was this sonnet given the number 12?
The number 12 strongly connects to celestial aspects such as the 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, and the 12 stages of the Moon and Sun. It is also the time, in Earth years, it takes for Jupiter to complete an orbit of the sun. This number plays a vital role in various timekeeping systems, including the Western calendar and units of time. Additionally, it frequently appears in significant religions worldwide, holding religious, mythological, and magical significance. Throughout ancient traditions, it symbolizes perfection, wholeness, and the harmony of the cosmos.
