One Hundred-Word Wonders is a writing challenge that highlights how stories can shine even when they’re very short. In the world of micro-fiction, writers create whole tales using only a handful of sentences.

These tiny stories prove how much can be said with very few words, surprising readers with the depth and feeling packed into just a hundred words. How can a story truly come alive in such a small space? Let’s dive in and find out.

This year, we’re shaking things up a bit with our word prompts. Instead of the usual themes or random selections, every prompt will come directly from movie titles. It’s a fresh way to spark creativity and see stories and ideas from angles you might not expect.

Whether you’re a fan of classics, new releases, or hidden gems, something exciting awaits everyone. This month, we have a twofer: Some Like it Hot, a comedy directed by Billy Wilder, and Do the Right Thing, a Spike Lee joint. You can use the entire prompt (two movie titles) or focus on one of the two.

Marked Ground
As the sun beat down, Dmytro swept his metal detector slowly across the scorched earth, each pass deliberate.
“Clear,” he called back.
Olena marked the lane behind him, chalk and flags, methodical.
The others on their team waited at the perimeter.
Then the ground swallowed the sound before the blast did—a dull thud, then nothing, then everything.
Dmytro was on the ground. His ears rang. Smoke.
“Olena!”
She was twenty feet back, down, one leg gone below the knee.
He crawled to her through marked ground and grabbed her hand.
“Stay with me. Stay.”
Her eyes found his. She stayed.

Ukraine is one of the most heavily mined countries in history. During the war, Russian forces deliberately seeded farmland, forests, and roadsides with land mines and unexploded ordnance across an estimated 160,000 square kilometers, roughly the size of Florida. Demining teams work in strict formation: one operator sweeping ahead with a metal detector, others marking cleared lanes with flags and chalk, while the rest wait safely at the perimeter. One wrong step ends everything. Teams have lost members this way, and the work will continue for decades.

Fractured Reality

was justice served;
cold blood never spilled, 
only stories told—
smooth lies wrapped 
tight by those in power.

But videos burn 
through their words,
showing what they 
want hidden,
faces frozen 
in final moments,
truth caught between 
gunshots and silence.

They demand belief 
in their version,
pressing doubt like 
a weight on our chests.

But open eyes
don’t ever forget,
remembering 
the cold, 
the fear,
the heavy stillness 
after the shots.

No fog of lies can 
cover what we see,
what we know 
deep inside—
truth burns stubborn, 
breaking through,
even when 
they want us blind.

Unveiled
Secrets of the past
Anna sat close to her daughter, Mia. The doctor’s words still hung between them.
“Mia, your condition... The doctor said it’s hereditary.”
Mia’s hands clenched. “I know it’s not from you. So it’s from Dad?”
Anna shook her head. “Not the man you called Dad. He’s not your biological father.”
Mia’s eyes widened. “What?”
Anna took a deep breath. “I had a brief relationship right before I met your Dad. That man is your father. Your Dad knew I was pregnant when he asked me to marry him. He was a good and kind man.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Some years ago I was Anna; not the Anna with a medical condition, but the Anna who discovered as an adult that the person whom I called Dad, was not my biological father. I was really angry at first, but as I allowed the truth to sit with me over the years, I have learned to accept it. My Dad was my father. You don't have to be connected biologically to be family, do you?

Glow Up!

A bright light rises  
over the cracked earth,  
not harsh, just
soft, steady,
insistent.  

It hums, low and quiet, 
calling roots to listen,  
drawing stars closer, downward,  
pulling night closer to day,
blending night with dawn. 

Hands reach out,  
trying to feel
this warmth that curves shadows,  
this glow that colors silence.  

In that light,  
time folds gently,  
ordinary things shift, bend—
a breath becomes a bridge,  
a glance sparks change.

Here, in this quiet blush,  
the world seems to pause,  
waiting for something new

Lynn’s 10-year-old eyes searched her father’s face for the truth hidden behind his silence.
“Dad, please,” she said. “Tell me. How come Grandma hasn’t visited us lately or even come for Thanksgiving?”
He took a deep breath. “After your mom died two years ago, I told her something that she couldn’t forgive, so she shut the door on us.”
“What did you tell her?”
He looked at her. “I was honest about who I am… who I loved.”
“But you love me!”
“It's not because of you. It’s because I also love Tim.”
“Well, that’s stupid! I love Tim too.”

Resolve
I sharpen a blade in the kitchen’s dim light, the edge glinting like my thoughts.
He thinks I don’t see the way he smiles at his phone, the way his fingers caress, linger over the keypad.
Every night stretches into hours, my heart heavy with betrayal. Each tick of the clock a reminder of the life we built, now cracked and crumbling.
But what do I know? It might just be an innocent flirtation.
Yet, every slice of the knife through the mini cucumbers convinces me otherwise; I've seen evidence.
The verdict is in and a dangerous resolve takes root.

Remembrances

The room thrummed with an unsettling energy.
Sarah sat, trying to concentrate, when the device on the table suddenly sprang to life with an ominous hum. It promised to connect her to her long-dead mother, a connection she desperately wanted.
Instead, a flood of horrifying images invaded her mind; tormented faces, scenes of agony that clawed their way from the depths of her memories.
No false recollections. These were fragments long buried, now unleashed by the device, gulag scenes she’d tried forgetting.
Women, including her mother, in a filthy box, whispering their prayers; her young eyes recording the daily horrors.

Busted
A CNF prompted by a Story stack: Separation Method
My hubby knew this guy, Bobby, who lived in a house where you could poke the drywall in your attic and—POOF!—instant access to your neighbor's!
One day, Bobby's playing hooky from school, bored, when he decides to squeeze through to the neighbor's attic and tiptoes downstairs.
This genius then raids their fridge and plops down to watch their TV while munching on their snacks!
The food coma hits him like a truck, and he's snoring on their couch when he awakens to their neighbor screaming at finding some kid passed out on her sofa covered in Cheeto dust!

A grandmother’s legacy
An old recipe box stuffed with recipes sat on the kitchen counter.
Lena watched her daughter, Maya, struggling to decipher the old family recipe her grandmother had written in her flowing script.
“It’s just a cake,” Maya said, furrowing her brow. “Why is it so complicated?”
“It’s not just a cake,” Lena said, leaning closer. “It’s a story of who we are, our roots.”
Maya sighed, tossing the paper aside.
“I don’t understand it!”
“Then let’s translate it together,” Lena said.
They worked side by side, flour dusting the counter.
The kitchen filled with laughter and the scent of nostalgia.

Perseverance
As Mia approached the final stretch of the marathon, exhaustion clawed at her limbs. The crowd roared, their cheers echoing in her ears.
“Don’t hold back, Mia!” shouted her friend, Sarah, waving a sign. “This is your moment!”
She thought of women who had missed chances, their dreams lost to time.
“I won’t let this slip away!” Mia gasped, finding a rush of strength.
With a deep breath, she surged forward, each stride fueled by determination.
Crossing the finish line, she raised her arms in victory, tears of joy streaming down her face.
“I did it! I truly did it!”

No Rest
Onward (three years in, and Ukraine still fights its invaders)
“Your eyes are heavy, friend,” Vasyl said, surveying remnants of the battle.
“Rest will come later,” Mykola replied, wiping blood from his knife. “We lost too many today.”
“Too many good fighters,” Vasyl echoed, his voice thick with sorrow. “What do we do now?”
“Fight on. For them,” Mykola said, determination flickering in his gaze.
“Will it ever end?”
“Not until we reclaim our home,” Mykola replied, clenching his fists. “But we need to regroup.”
Vasyl nodded, the weight of loss pressing down. “Then let’s gather what’s left of us. We can’t let their sacrifice be in vain.”
“Together, always.”

Clemency
A time to hope

Time dripped like a leaky faucet in the dim cell, each drop echoing the rhythm of his heart—slow, agonizing, yet persistent.
Jacob sat on the edge of his cot, the cold metal biting through the thin fabric of his pants.
Shadows stretched across the concrete walls. He visualized the sun outside bathing the world in golden light, a stark contrast to his gray existence.
He clutched a worn photograph, the faces of loved ones blurred from his fingers tracing their outlines.
Today, hope flickered, a candle in the dark, as he awaited the decision that could shatter his chains.

My response is included below. (I wrote it after watching the movie, The Fall Guy, with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt for the first time two weeks ago. I recommend it as good escapism plus it’s funny. I laughed out loud many times.)

Fall Guy
Stunt judgment
Len stood at the rooftop’s edge, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
“This jump is nothing,” he shouted to his crew below. “I’ve nailed it a hundred times!”
“Len, think it through!” his director, Mark, pleaded. “The angle is off today!”
“I can handle it!” he yelled, though his confidence wavered.
With a deep breath, he launched himself into the air.
Mid-flight, panic set in as he realized the distance was far less than he’d calculated.
“Len!” Mark’s voice echoed in his earpiece. “Pull the chute now!”
His heart raced as he fought against gravity, the ground rushing up too fast.

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream

A sacred pause

Beneath the frost,  
      The world wrapped tight in winter's silent grasp,  
      Creatures drift within their earthen chambers,  
      Cradled by the whispers of the cold night.  

In shadows deep,  
      Each heartbeat echoes through the quiet there,  
      Breath rises like a mist, then fades away,  
      As thoughts wander through the realms of slumber.  

Beneath the snow,  
      Hope unfurls like tendrils in the dark,  
      Awaiting warmth, the sun's gentle caress,  
      To coax the world from dreams into the light.  

Here, in stillness,  
      A promise of spring, hidden yet steadfast,  
      In hibernation’s hush, a sacred pause,  
      To sleep, perchance to dream, until the thaw.

The ecstasy of existence

Suspended in the air, clinging to the moment,
I gaze out upon the dark woods that night,
      Their shadows calling 
                                           softly,
Awakening all my senses to a heightened state.

The pleasure of soaring from 
                                                tree 
to 
                             tree,
Our wings brushing against the leaves,
The cool, green forest emanating
Our shared exhilaration,
The pure ecstasy of existence in this instance.

We whisper to the creatures below,
      Our voices 
                      🎶 harmonizing 🎶
with the nocturnal sky,
And the primal instinct within us is ensnared,
Once more ignited in fervent passion,
Compelled by the innate desire
To ascend ever higher into the heavens.

Deserted

(Keeping with the Halloween/Horror theme)

At the path's end,  
an old house looms,  
shrouded in kudzu and shadows,  
its stories buried in silence.  

Once alive with laughter,  
now it sags, off-kilter,
its windows, shuttered eyes,  
boarded against the world.  

Deserted toys hide in tall grass,  
whisper rhymes of forgotten joy,
as fallen leaves rustle underfoot
in chilly autumn air.
 
On this Halloween’s eve,  
the light breeze crackles with unease,  
daring mischief makers to venture near,  
but fear relieves them of pranks, tricks.

The house keeps watch,  
its empty rooms echo with memories,  
waiting, yearning for a heartbeat,  
for life to return and break the stillness.

Sea Voyage

I sat on the deck on a worn wooden crate, gazing at the changing hues of the sea, from sapphire to cerulean, lost in contemplation.
Everything was as I remembered—the creaking ship, the scent of brine mingling with the ripe fruit in the cargo hold, the raucous cries of seagulls as they circled overhead, and the gentle lapping of waves against the hull whispering tales of ancient seafarers and hidden treasures. As I sat, I felt the weight of the years lift.
On the horizon, the islands ascended like emerald jewels, beckoning me with promises of adventure and discovery.

Very Dry

The bartender wiped the counter, his movements slow and deliberate, as if each stroke held a hidden message.
A guest approached, his eyes darting from side to side.
“I need a drink that will chase away the ghosts," the guest said, with a tinge of desperation.
“Anything in particular?” the bartender asked.
“A very dry martini,” the guest said.
The bartender poured the drink, a silent offering to the abyss.
"Drink this, but beware," he said.
"What do you mean?" the guest asked, fear creeping into his voice.
"That way madness lies," he said, a warning lost in the shadows.

Author’s Note

This prompt was inspired by and his piece on Stephen King.
Any trip around the Boulder/Denver area should include a visit to Estes Park and The Stanley Hotel, whose website proclaims: [The hotel] might have eventually succumbed to the wrecking ball, if not for a fortuitous visit by author Stephen King. A stay of one night was enough to inspire his third major work and first hardcover bestseller The Shining, which remains a landmark masterpiece in a long and well-known list of novels.

She stood at the edge of the precipice, her heartbeat pounding in her ears.
The wind whipped through her hair, invigorating her spirit.
With a deep breath, she welcomed the rush of adrenaline surging through her veins.
Then, the world blurred as she leapt into the unknown, trusting her strength and resilience.
The exhilaration of the free-fall consumed her, awakening a dormant fire within.
